This is what advocates of #EndSARS should be agitating for: a more effective and friendlier SARS. It is possible! We cannot cut off our nose to spite our face. Democracy, Biafra And A Sense Of History

Today, democracy has given the Nigerian people, voice. There is a greater consciousness of the power of the people, as well as the need to hold persons in power accountable. The electoral process is still imperfect, but the people are now supremely confident of their right to choose. But not all our problems have been solved. For example, exactly 50 years ago today, the late Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, hero of the Biafran Revolution, led the people of the Bight of Biafra on a secession move out of Nigeria Read more…

Biafra: The History

Igbos doubted that Nigeria’s oppressive military government would allow them to develop, or even survive, so on May 30, 1967, Lieutenant Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu and other non-Igbo representatives of the area established the Republic of Biafra, comprising several states of Nigeria. After diplomatic efforts by Nigeria failed to reunite the country, war between Nigeria and Biafra broke out in July 1967. Read more…

Boko Haram: The Nigeria Islamist Group

Nigeria’s ongoing battle with insurgent groups and continued government corruption threaten the stability and political integrity of Africa’s most populous state. Since 2011, Boko Haram—one of the largest Islamist militant groups in Africa—has increased terrorist attacks on religious and political groups, local police and military, as well as indiscriminately attacking civilians in busy markets and villages. The kidnapping of over two hundred schoolgirls in April 2014 drew international attention to the ongoing threat from Boko Haram and the government’s inability to contain it. Read more…

Okezie Ikpeazu’s Willingness and ACCIMA’s Weakness to Develop Enyimba Hotels

There is no hiding the fact that since assumption of office, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, executive governor of Abia State, has demonstrated unwavering commitment to partnering with good spirited investors to attract investment into the state and move it to the path of growth and development. This is really a sad development because Ikpeazu had thought that the hotel would bridge a gaping gap between investors thronging Aba for business and their accommodation and leisure needs. The Atiku Abubakar Conundrum

And you know what? If Mr Atiku secures the PDP ticket to contest for the Presidency in 2019 (in a few months’ time in 2018, this will be sorted out), there will be a bit of panic to the fainthearted and finicky former PDP deserters who went to the APC and they will troop back to the PDP again. At least, this is what in my opinion, the current PDP members will be counting on. They will be welcome back, their numbers and resources utilised, but they will not be forgiven for defecting in the first place, after losing the Presidency in 2015. The exception to this rule, of course, is Mr Atiku Abubakar himself. Read more…

Alex Ekwueme said: “One of the traits of your government is that the President and his deputy were men of proven integrity but the government was accused of massive corruption. When the military came in and they set up military tribunals, the first people to be jailed for corruption were those taking kickbacks from the Great Nigeria Insurance which went up in flames a few days ago. Can #BringBackOurGirls Bring Back Our Girls?

Nigeria is on the verge of change. The current president Muhammadu Buhari is tackling corruption– known as Buhari’s anti-corruption war. During his election campaign, he declared that one of the things he will accomplish is to fight corruption. Some of the recent cases have seen politicians and people in power arrested for extortion. They had the option to transfer all the laundered funds back to the economy or risk being imprisoned if they did not adhere to the rules. This is a big step to ensure that the threat posed by Boko Haram will begin to have less of an impact in the country. It will also help to restore Nigeria’s lapsing economy and infrastructure. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Author and Feminist Powerhouse

How have your family reacted to your growing profile, because things have dialed up a notch?

My family [Adichie is one of six children] has always been supportive. I think because even as a child I was slightly unusual. I was the child who asked questions, who pushed back a bit more, and so there’s always been room made for me in my family to be a little [explorative]. So I feel as though sort of having become this public person is something that they are proud of. [But] when it comes to gender, I don’t think my being a public face for feminism is their favourite thing; I don’t think they have an enormous enthusiasm. Read more…
